Employment Consequences of DUI Convictions

There are a host of concerns and fears that most everyone who gets arrested for DUI shares. Will I have to go to jail? Will I lose my driver’s license? Will I have a criminal record? How much time will I have to spend in court? For many people, all of these individual questions boil down to one overriding concern: How will this affect my job. And like the answers to the initial questions, the answer to the last one is not the same for everybody. For many occupations, a DUI conviction in of itself may not have any direct effect. For others, the mere fact of the DUI arrest may have immediate and severe consequences.

While it is not practical to do a review of DUI consequences as they relate to every career, this section contains a synopsis and overview of many of the careers that are most impacted by a DUI prosecution. Among the occupations most likely to be impacted by DUI penalties are:

  • Truck drivers and holders of a commercial driver’s license (CDL)
  • law Enforcement
  • The Military
  • Pilots and Airmen
  • Ship Captains, Merchant Mariners
  • Teachers
  • Real Estate Agents

Regardless of your occupation, there are potential consequences of a DUI that could affect anyone’s ability to perform their job functions such as:

  • Jail
  • License Suspension
  • Limitations on Interstate Travel
  • Inability to Enter Canada
  • Installation of an Ignition Interlock Device
  • Requirement to Enter Into Alcohol Treatment
